Birmingham City Council was shamed into action after images of a mouldy flat it rents out went viral. Behind the shocking pictures is a family in crisis and a system at breaking point.
There is something utterly disquieting about sitting in a flat where the mould on the walls appears to be growing before your eyes. And where the musty smell of damp seems to crawl into your lungs. Yet this is the reality of life inside a home rented out to an elderly mum and her daughter by Birmingham City Council.
It’s one of thousands the local authority owns and rents out to families and individuals in need across the city.
The condition of many of them is poor, including high rises, terraced properties and flats, and despite the best efforts of the council’s housing repairs service there are long waiting lists.
The plight of this flat’s residents, a 75-year-old mum, disabled by a stroke, and her daughter, 44, a health care assistant at a city hospital, struck a chord when their story went viral last week.
First covered by Birmingham Live in January, when it was described as probably the worst flat in Birmingham, the story had stayed under the radar since. But when social media savvy housing campaigner Kwajo Tweneboa posted a video from inside, the story blew up. The shocking scenes forced the authorities to act, finally.
Together we took in what was clearly an uninhabitable flat. Nobody should be sleeping here, not for one night, never mind years.
